RECENT RACES
It was hot and dry in the deserts of Eastern Idaho for the Teton Ogre. We were doing great through the Stage 1 MTB ride, and we pushed hard up Meadow Peak during the Stage 2 trek. As we came down the backside of the mountain, we had to stop for medical reasons and ended up getting passed by several teams. We pushed on to the TA, but only two teammates continued on to the final bike ride for Stage 3, where we ran out time at the last CP before the finish line. Fewer than half the teams crossed the finish line on this challenging course.
Aaron, Jared, and Colby teamed up with the Utah Schools for the Deaf and Blind (USDB) for a 70 mile paddle across the Puget Sound in a 40 ft canoe. USDB teachers and administrators made up the majority of the team. These dedicated folks normally take blind students on the race, but this year was a chance for the USDB staff to train and prepare for bringing students next year. We're grateful they had room in the boat for us. We finished 17th out of 104 teams, and completed the paddle in under 18 hours.
We were proud to be the only U.S. team in the race. We lost a team member to exhaustion after a few days of racing. Three continued on, and at the next transition we picked up a Frenchman whose team had dropped out. We pushed hard, but bowed out before crossing the finish line due to medical reasons. The ropes section was amazing, the paddles were long, and there were cows and castles everywhere! Big thanks to the village of Soursac for your kindness.
Documentary coming soon . . .
We crossed the finish line after about 150 hours of racing. It was a brutal course with more snow than we (or anyone) wanted. The low point was a 20+ hour hike-a-bike through snow, and the high point was a thrilling (but cold) 22-mile whitewater section on the Umpqua River--we only swam once in the class-4 chaos.
